Well, it varies; but I'm going to split the difference between 4000 and 10,000 ads (all types) DAILY. That's DAILY. Let's say 5000 a day, every day for our entire lives. So how much over a life? You do the math. Kind of boggles the mind. The book also went into not just ads; but the actual products the ads pushed: perhaps the most famous example being that of the RITZ cracker, which supposedly had (or has?) the word "sex" etched onto it's surface:
This is all a way of saying: I don't know if the HUGO BOSS company is pushing a Nazi agenda. But in looking at this particular material, I can't NOT see this stuff. Maybe I'm crazy. Maybe I'm not. So let's look at the following ad for BOSS men's underwear starring Mr. David Beckham:
This "film" by a duo named "Mert and Marcus" starts with a garage door going up and the sound of crickets. Now, I don't know who Mert and Marcus are, so let's find out...
Speaking of prisoners...
Let's get back to Mr. Beckham....
He pulls his antique sports car into a very empty and isolated garage. And because of those crickets we hear, my first thought is that we're out in the country somewhere. The English countryside, as DB's voiture has him driving on the right side. And he is British, so this makes sense. All of these Boss ads seem to have their superstuds driving cars reminiscent of the past. But not too far past. Maybe as far past as the 1930's? As Mr. B. strides down the empty expanse of his cavernous carpark for one; we cut to a shot of...hmmmmmm...not London; but New York City. Another of Boss' patented "hey, let's film Manhattan from unusual angles and vantage points that don't immediately say New York City, because establishing shots should now be disestablishing...because...because...fashion.
When we see him pull into his garage, he gets out of the car and walks down a corridor, which leads directly into his living space. So, if it's one continuous trajectory, that means he's on the ground floor, yes? So, how can his neighbors, who are clearly shown in a high-rise, have such a direct view into his apartment? Well, in the real world, they couldn't. But this isn't the real world. It's a designer underwear ad.
1. Working out.
2. Eating from a bowl.
3. Watching wall projections
4. Playing billiards.
5. Writing on a sheet of glass.
6. Post work out showering while wearing underwear.
7. Enticing his neighbors / being an exhibitionist.
8. Disrobing entirely / giving full-monty.
Let's talk about the truly dumb elements of this before we get into the truly disturbing elements of this commercial: the elements that I think this "film" is really about. Elements I am going to be absolutely honest about. But before that, let's break down that list, above, shall we?
1. Working out:
It's entirely plausible that this man might work out after he got home from work, if he's just getting home from work. However, since the neighbors across the way seem to be having a party and seem to be cutting-edge-fashionatic-hipsteramas all, then people probably didn't even start arriving for that until 11 or so. So he's getting home from some nighttime activity. Still, he might have a quick workout if he'd missed a gym day or something.
2. Eating from a bowl:
Perhaps he didn't like what was being served at the event he's just come home from? Or more likely, he's eating a bowl of creatine for his workout, since he probably doesn't even eat. What else could explain the zero body fat percentage of a man who is now 51 years old?
3. Watching wall projections:
This is just weird. Someone apparently this precise and wealthy would more than likely have the most current widescreen TV; not projecting his media onto the rough surface of a concrete wall. And why is he watching what appears to be vintage horse racing footage? That makes zero sense to me...so far...
4. Playing billiards:
I'm not gonna read anything into this one. Dudes like to play pool. A rich dude would quite feasibly have a pool table.
5. Writing on a sheet of glass:
Okay, this one is just bizarre. Did he fall asleep and dream he was doing this? I reversed the image so we can read what he's writing:
6. Post Workout Showering In Underwear:
This perhaps makes the least sense of all of this. Why would he step into the shower in his underwear when he's in his own house? He wouldn't. Who would? Maybe someone in a prison or some other sort of institution like that? We'll get back to this. Maybe it's a game he plays with his voyeur pals? Although later in the commercial he seems caught off guard about being spied on.
7. Enticing His Neighbors / Exhibitionism:
Maybe. Does he know they're watching him or not? Or is he putting himself on display for everyone (he doesn't seem to have invested in any kind of window treatments) to see? Or, like a prisoner, does he have no choice in being so closely watched?
8. Full Monty:
Did he just then remember to take his underwear off (which, frankly, makes him seem kind of dumb); or, is he giving them what they want under some kind of pressure...or duress?
And I'm just going to be up front here about what I believe that I'm seeing. And what I think I'm seeing is a prisoner in a series of prison cells. But not just any prison. A Nazi concentration camp. Why do I think this? Well, his apartment looks like a concrete bunker or prison with it's accompanying standard light fixtures and bare cement walls and so on. When filmed through his windows he particularly seems to be behind bars or even when he's in front of them:
Yes. So I think we are watching a not very thinly disguised "film" of a prisoner in a camp. One who is being watched and exploited by the, shall we say, higher ups. I mean, we all know that the Nazis had soirees in their swank houses that were often staffed by prisoners and that they could just look out a window to watch hunky prisoners take showers. And we really can't get away from the shower scenario here, can we?
Let's look at the sexual element of this. Everyone staring at DB from on high is lusting after him; and why wouldn't they? I do find it weird that everyone thirsting over him appears to be about half his age:
We can see throughout the commercial that Mr. B. is wearing a wedding band. Yes, he's married in real life; but in the context of this commercial, we have to wonder why? The ring is very nearly put on display, getting every angle except a close-up:
And I'm going to close with this image from the commercial:
Do I have to spell it out?
I probably should; but I'm not going to. I think you get the point.
Now let's get to the why?
If I'm correct about what I'm seeing here...and I'm not saying I am...perhaps I have an overactive imagination...but what if I am, and this company is pushing this terrifying messaging.
Why?
The only thing I can think of is that FASCISM is on the rise globally. Particularly in Germany, where the government has had to take major precautions in trying to prevent it's resurgence. HUGO BOSS is a German company that was actually an active part of the Third Reich. So, what if there was a FOURTH REICH? Wouldn't Boss and company be nicely posited in a position of loyalty...maybe get back those lucrative contracts to make the new uniforms?
Maybe...maybe not...?
I have a beautiful Hugo Boss leather coat. I'm planning on removing it's HUGO BOSS label and burning it and donating the coat to charity. Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do.
I would ask you to join me; but I won't. You'll have to look at this stuff and make up your own mind. David Beckham might want to reevaluate a few things; and again I say I'm sure he is entirely unaware of what is my own theoretical evaluation of this commercial.
And I really hope I'm wrong about all of this.
A couple of more images from the spot.
This one, that made me think of stolen art being stored in a bunker. The Nazis may have thought a lot of art was degenerate; but it didn't keep them from stealing it:
Was I really seeing old-timey horses being projected in Mr. B.'s abode? Yeah. Yeah, I was...
